Overview
Two days after Billy’s accident, Christos seeks out Mabel to apologize for not intervening and for Billy’s cruelty. He publicly defends Mabel, rejects the rumor she hurt Billy or her family, and names her the school’s scapegoat. Mabel gains an unexpected ally, easing her isolation amid escalating gossip.
Summary
Two days after Billy’s accident, Mabel and Daphne hide in the library to avoid confrontations, then head to the bike shed after school. As Mabel unlocks her bike, Christos appears. He opens with light banter, then says he has been looking for Mabel to apologize.
Christos acknowledges he knew Mabel’s mother had died but not about Mabel’s baby sister, and calls Billy’s taunt “really low.” He also apologizes for not stepping in when Billy kissed Mabel without consent. He adds that he has been telling others Mabel didn’t hurt Billy, though he jokes Billy might have deserved comeuppance.
Walking their bikes instead of riding, Christos explains Billy’s interest in Mabel and jokes about preferring smart girls. When Mabel asks what people believe, Christos says truth may not matter because groups want a common enemy; Mabel has become that scapegoat, which he calls unfair.
At their parting, Christos tells Mabel he doesn’t believe she killed anyone and offers discreet support, quipping that if she ever did kill Billy, he wouldn’t tell. Mabel, unexpectedly comforted, laughs on her way home, newly buoyed by his empathy.
