Summary
Mabel reflects that kids have always been the same, recalling her own teen horror: fear of being sent to her father and the distraction of a secret romance with Mr. Loukas. They plan a clandestine meeting in the school sports shed, arranged by note, which thrills her and helps her avoid thoughts of her father’s plans for Rosehill.
Inside the dark shed, their usual physical encounters escalate. Mr. Loukas pushes boundaries, sliding his hand under Mabel’s bra and into her underwear. Mabel feels fear, resignation, and confusion, believing she has tacitly consented by showing up, even as she fails to find any pleasure.
Brother Stanislaus interrupts, calling out from the doorway. Mr. Loukas hastily claims he is retrieving a basketball. The principal unlocks the ball cage, and as the men leave, Brother Stanislaus locks the shed, unknowingly trapping Mabel inside.
Expecting Mr. Loukas to return, Mabel waits until dark, then realizes she is alone. She forces an escape by prying up a tin wall corner with hockey sticks and crawls out, filthy and shaken.
Instead of going home, Mabel goes to Mr. Loukas’s house, seeking an explanation and reassurance. A well-dressed young woman answers the door, studies Mabel with growing suspicion, and asks who she wants.
