Summary
In the present, Elsie talks at length to Libby and Adeem, watching their expressions shift between youth and empathy as they listen. Adeem repeatedly ignores calls from Meera until Libby urges a break, and the pair move comfortably around Elsie’s home, signaling growing trust and intimacy.
Stepping outside, Elsie finds Persephone sitting in the gutter beside a “Forthcoming Auction” sign she has pulled from the lawn. Persephone declares Elsie cannot move, fearing the loss of care, apple pie, and a place to play. Unable to ignore the plea, Elsie lowers herself beside Persephone, who tearfully asks, “Who will be my grandma?” The question pierces Elsie, and they embrace, both crying.
