Chapter 11
Overview
Ishaan’s death is quietly confirmed as cleaners clear his porch, underscoring impermanence on Kenny Lane. With the shelter full, Elsie begrudgingly keeps Nugget and tries to rehome her with Persephone, but the dog bonds to Elsie.
Persephone’s midday-unsupervised visits and her “bestie” claim deepen Elsie’s unwanted ties to the child.
Summary
Weeks pass with Ishaan’s porch unchanged until cleaners arrive, and neighbors quietly confirm that Ishaan has died. Seeing his now-bare porch, Elsie is unexpectedly moved, reflecting on mortality and how life continues without ceremony. The police do not follow up, and everyday rhythms resume on Kenny Lane.
Peter remains friendly and brings a discounted dog bed and feeder for Nugget. Determined not to keep the dog, Elsie tries to surrender Nugget, but the shelter is at capacity and asks her to hold the dog longer. Frustrated, Elsie threatens to euthanize Nugget if forced to wait, a bluff that even Daphne questions.
Persephone appears with a Hula-Hoop and presses Elsie to play cards. Spotting an opportunity, Elsie suggests Persephone take Nugget, promising to help convince Roxanne, who is sleeping in the middle of the day. Persephone is thrilled—until Nugget growls at her.
When Elsie demonstrates, Nugget licks Elsie’s hand, revealing an unexpected bond. Persephone concludes the dog wants to stay with Elsie, undermining Elsie’s plan. The moment hints at Roxanne’s questionable availability and Persephone’s loneliness.
Persephone insists they are friends and calls Elsie her “bestie,” leaving Elsie both irritated and affected by the child’s unfiltered loyalty. The chapter closes with Elsie increasingly entangled with Nugget and Persephone despite her resistance.
