Chapter 47

Overview

In a flashback, Cess confronts Elliott with Mary’s will, establishing that Rosehill passes to Mabel (or to Cess until Mabel is of age). She orders Elliott to leave and asserts de facto guardianship of Mabel. Elliott implies a violent threat by noting he’d inherit only if no relatives remained, then leaves. Mabel accepts Cess’s protection and feels loved.

Summary

Then, a week after Elliott discovered Daphne and Mabel in his bedroom, Mabel comes to breakfast to find Elliott reading the paper while Cess cooks. Cess serves food, then calmly announces that after breakfast Elliott must pack and leave Rosehill, while she and Mabel will remain.

Cess presents legal documents and explains Mary’s will: Mary inherited Rosehill, and upon her death it passes to her oldest child if of age, otherwise to Cess until that child comes of age. Elliott would inherit only if there were no other living relatives. Elliott scoffs, intending to consult Stan, but Cess notes Stan drafted the documents and called them incontestable.

When Elliott threatens to take Mabel with him, Cess asserts she has been acting as Mabel’s guardian since her mother’s death and that Elliott, given his work, travel, and lack of residence, would fail in court. Elliott insults Mary, declares he’ll still end up with the house, and pointedly repeats that the law favors him only if there are no other living relatives, implying a threat, then leaves.

After he’s gone, Mabel worries about his insinuation. Cess dismisses it as bluster, reiterates that the paperwork is ironclad, and promises she will not let Elliott take Mabel. Mabel believes her, feeling loved and protected for the first time.
