Chapter 73

Overview

Peter confronts Elsie about the auction sign and her plan to leave Kenny Lane. Elsie explains she’s selling to reduce neighborhood strain and protect the new child resident. Peter, bound by a promise to his late mother, pleads with Elsie to stay and tearfully calls her “Mum,” revealing their bond.

Summary

As Adeem and Libby pack up, a knock at Elsie’s door draws her to find Peter leaving. He turns back when she calls out, and they exchange light banter before his mood shifts.

Peter points to the restored FORTHCOMING AUCTION sign and challenges Elsie about selling. Elsie explains that, despite not being at fault, her presence causes trouble for neighbors and is riskier now that a child lives on the street. She says she intends to move somewhere quieter, perhaps the country.

Peter protests that this is Elsie’s home and argues he cannot keep his promise to his late mother to look after Elsie if she leaves. Elsie counters that times have changed since that promise and suggests he could check on her by phone.

When pressed, Peter hints he knows more than Elsie thinks. Overcome, he embraces her and pleads, “You can’t go. I won’t let you,” then calls her “Mum,” revealing their relationship. Elsie, moved, returns the affection but maintains her decision, telling Peter he doesn’t have a choice.
