Summary
Mabel returns to Rosehill soaked and shaken, uncertain why she has come back, and notices her father’s car still in the driveway. Inside, the house is quiet; Ness’s umbrella is gone, suggesting movement since Mabel fled. At the top of the stairs, she sees her father’s umbrella and senses something wrong.
Mabel pushes open Cess’s bedroom door and finds Cess lying naked on the floor, head twisted at an impossible angle, lips still painted bright red. Her father stands over the body, composed. When Mabel accuses him, he coolly replies that Mabel killed Cess, signaling his intent to frame her.
Faced with his manipulation and Cess’s death, Mabel seizes his umbrella as a weapon. She drives the steel tip into his upper chest, then strikes his skull repeatedly. The assault continues until he collapses and lies still.
Mabel checks for a pulse and finds none. Confronted with the blood and finality, she recognizes what she has done and reflects that if she is "Mad Mabel," it is madness forged by her father’s abuse. The chapter ends with the silence of the house and the irreversible shift in Mabel’s life.
