Mabel learns her father’s lawyer is moving to claim Rosehill, arguing he needs the house more. The bid is strengthened by news of his impending marriage to Susan and her daughter, Amelia, and by positioning Mabel as a child to be raised there. The revelation threatens Cess’s hold on the home and Mabel’s stability.
Summary
After school, Mabel finds Cess and Ness at the kitchen table, surrounded by folders and paperwork, drinking whiskey. They seat Mabel and reveal a letter from her father’s lawyer regarding Rosehill.
Cess explains that while they expected it, the lawyer will argue Mabel’s father is entitled to the house. Their own lawyer warns the law is slippery and a judge could find merit in his claim that he needs the property more.
Pressed by Mabel, Cess outlines the basis of the case: Mabel’s father intends to remarry and will claim Rosehill is required to raise his family. Ness adds that the bride is Susan, who has a young daughter, Amelia.
The strongest part of his argument, Cess says, is that he would raise Mabel—the heir—inside Rosehill alongside Susan and Amelia. This strategy unsettles Mabel, who recognizes her father is leveraging her residency to seize the house.
