Summary
Christos returns to school after recovering from his fall, but he tells Mabel his mother won’t allow them to see each other outside school. Mabel accepts, concluding that good things are not for her and quietly redirects her resolve toward undermining her father’s control.
Three months after Mr. Loukas’s death, his fiancée, Tessa, is charged and confesses. Her account matches Daphne’s theory: she struck him with a fireplace poker, then tried to stage an accident after finding a flat tire. Despite the confession, gossip continues to implicate Mabel.
