Summary
Elsie prepares her small home for a filmed interview with YouTubers Libby and Adeem, both nervous in the unfamiliar setting. She reflects on why she chose them over major media: their youth feels less threatening and more earnest.
Prompted on timing, Elsie explains that legal options won’t stop the press and that she now seeks peace, even if it means speaking publicly. She jokes dryly to ease tension and confirms boundaries: her face will be blurred, her location withheld, and she will approve edits.
Daphne decides not to remain for the interview, reminding Elsie that while Daphne is part of the story, the burden and consequences are Elsie’s. Elsie accepts this and focuses on the task.
As recording begins, Libby delivers a formal introduction summarizing the notorious case: in 1959, at fifteen, Mabel Waller was convicted of murder, rumored to have killed before, and branded “Mad Mabel.” Libby frames this as the first time, at eighty-one, that Mabel—Elsie—will speak.
