Overview
At the Hasting ball, Vin gathers critical gossip, witnesses Ministry reach, and hears of brutal Inquisitor crackdowns. Shan coerces Vin to report on Elend’s books. Vin confronts Elend about skaa exploitation; he admits a coerced past incident and renounces the practice, offering a courting token. Vin then spies on Elend’s reformist discussion group before Kelsier arrives and dismisses them as nonthreatening.
Summary
Late at the Hasting ball, Vin listens as Lady Kliss spins house-war rumors about Tekiel and Geffenry while an obligator casually witnesses a trivial promise, highlighting the Ministry’s pervasive control. Kliss also reports Inquisitors are increasingly massacring skaa crews. Vin’s revulsion toward the nobility resurfaces, yet she continues collecting intelligence.
Shan Elariel arrives and publicly belittles Vin, then privately presses Vin to read and report the true contents of Elend Venture’s books, using Soothing and threats to enlist her as a pawn. Shaken but defiant, Vin resolves to push back where she can.
Spotting Elend, Vin confronts him on a balcony about nobles sleeping with skaa. Elend admits his father forced him, at thirteen, into an encounter that ended in the girl’s murder and vows he never repeated it. They debate corruption and skaa intelligence; Elend’s contrition and reformist ideals persuade Vin to trust him. He offers her his handkerchief—a courting token—before leaving to meet friends.
Vin observes Elend depart with a Lekal and a Hasting heir and decides to follow using Allomancy. She vaults through the mists to a tower window and overhears Elend’s small circle discussing banned political texts, noble unity, and resisting the Lord Ruler through moderation and future leadership. The group’s fifth member is skeptical of mere reading; Elend argues ideas can change houses and, eventually, the Empire.
Kelsier unexpectedly joins Vin at the windows and explains he has spied on the group before, judging them harmless idealists rather than conspirators. He counsels pragmatism and arranges to regroup at Clubs’s shop while preserving appearances, as Vin returns to Sazed at the party.
