Overview

Kelsier assembles a specialized crew and reveals Yeden, leader of the skaa rebellion, as their employer. The plan: raise an army, neutralize Luthadel’s Garrison, plunge the city into chaos, seize the palace, and steal the Lord Ruler’s atium. Kelsier vows to try killing the Lord Ruler using the mysterious Eleventh Metal, while Vin is revealed as a Mistborn recruit. Clubs refuses and walks out.

Summary

In Camon’s former lair, Vin listens as Milev’s crew gossips about Kelsier. They recount his legend—betrayal, the Pits of Hathsin, and his escape—while Vin wrestles with distrust and the revelation of her Allomancy. Two newcomers arrive: Breeze, a Soother, and Ham, a Thug; Breeze briefly Soothes Vin, sparking a moral debate. Clubs, a gruff Smoker, and Yeden, an austere skaa rebel leader, also appear.

Kelsier and Dockson enter. Kelsier declares Yeden the employer and outlines a radical job: help the skaa rebellion overthrow the Final Empire by raising an army, neutralizing the Luthadel Garrison, creating citywide chaos, and enabling Yeden to seize the palace. Payment is modest upfront but includes half the Lord Ruler’s atium stockpile. The crew weighs risks, ministries, Inquisitors, and the unknown atium mine; Kelsier reveals he knows the Pits are the mine from personal experience.

Kelsier details the strategy: force the Garrison and possibly Inquisitors into the streets, leaving the palace exposed; in the turmoil, Yeden takes the palace while the crew steals the atium, crippling the Lord Ruler financially. Clubs objects, calling it impossible, and storms out despite Yeden’s fears of betrayal; Kelsier refuses coercion on principle.

Recruitment follows. Ham commits; Breeze hesitates, then joins after Kelsier tempts him with challenge and wine. Kelsier invites Vin, who agrees. Kelsier reveals to the crew that Vin is a Mistborn who can both Soothe and Riot; Yeden is incredulous.

Kelsier adds a final, personal objective: kill the Lord Ruler. He presents a sliver of the fabled Eleventh Metal, claiming northern legends say it is the Lord Ruler’s weakness. Though uncertain how it works, Kelsier vows to try; failing that, they will still draw the Lord Ruler away and rob him. Vin concludes she has bound herself to a madman—but stays to learn Allomancy.
