EPILOGUE

At dusk, Sazed tells Vin and Marsh his conclusion: the Lord Ruler was both Feruchemist and Allomancer, compounding youth by burning his own Feruchemical metalminds. Losing his bracers made his hoarded youth inaccessible, causing the sudden aging that enabled Vin to kill him.

They consider implications: the Lord Ruler feared Terris bloodlines mixing with nobility, prompting breeding programs. Yet Sazed’s theory doesn’t explain the Lord Ruler’s overwhelming Allomantic strength or Vin’s brief drawing upon the mists. They note the mystery of the Well of Ascension and the origins of Allomancy appearing with the mists.

Marsh describes Inquisitor spikes, pain, and how removing the central spike kills them. He intends to co-opt the Ministry carefully, though unknown numbers of Inquisitors remain. Discussion turns to kandra: Kelsier’s contract now binds the creature to Vin, though she recoils from using it. They also note the empty atium treasury and Elend’s role in stopping the post-revolt slaughter with an idealistic speech.

Later, Vin watches Elend working beneath the mists, torn between returning to a life of shadows or embracing connection. Remembering an Inquisitor’s claim that Reen died under torture protecting her, Vin reinterprets her past and resolves her doubt.

Vin drops into Elend’s study, teases him for reading too much, and accepts his embrace. She realizes that being held is what she has always wanted, choosing Elend and a hopeful future despite unanswered threats hinted by the Lord Ruler’s final warning.
