Overview

Vin and Spook watch House Hasting’s downfall as the city’s war intensifies. Kelsier and Vin go to meet Marsh but find him brutally murdered, with a hidden note hinting at an Inquisitor weakness. Kelsier orders an immediate evacuation and Renoux’s withdrawal. He then returns to the Pits of Hathsin to sabotage the Empire by destroying atium geodes.

Summary

Vin meets Spook atop a rooftop overlooking Luthadel as soldiers assail Keep Hasting. They discuss the nobles’ nighttime war and the Lord Ruler’s tolerance for it, and Vin reflects that—even if the grand plan fails—the crew has still crippled the Great Houses and inspired skaa hope. Vin gently tells Spook she loves Elend, then learns focused tin use is about ignoring distractions.

Kelsier arrives, thanks Vin for helping him reconsider Mare’s supposed betrayal, and leads her to a nearby skaa tenement. Inside, crowded families revere him as the Survivor. Kelsier shares news of Hasting’s fall, promises food, and urges them to stand a little straighter. Though uneasy at their worship, Vin sees Kelsier’s genuine care.

Kelsier and Vin proceed to Marsh’s Soothing station rendezvous. Inside, they find Marsh’s body horrifically mutilated—sign of an Inquisitor. Vin retrieves a note hidden inside a table leg. Back at Clubs’s, Dockson reads Marsh’s message: he suspected Inquisitors, learned little but believes a secret weakness exists, and feared he’d been discovered.

Grief hardens into resolve. Kelsier orders Renoux to withdraw immediately under a cover story, dispatches guards, declares the shop compromised, and moves the crew to the backup lair within minutes. He vows to retaliate where it will hurt most.

Cut to the Pits of Hathsin: a prisoner, Walin, claws up from the geode caverns with a find. Kelsier appears, frees him, and instructs him to sell the atium nugget and flee. Then Kelsier descends into the rifts, using tin and iron to locate and shatter atium crystal pockets. He initiates a plan long held in reserve: destroy the Empire’s only source of atium.
