Overview

In Luthadel, Vin hides within a thieving crew led by the volatile Camon as he poses as Lord Jedue to secure a Steel Ministry transport contract. Vin secretly uses her "Luck" to calm Camon and lower Prelan Laird’s suspicion, pushing the obligator to reconsider the deal. The chapter establishes Vin’s survival mindset, hints of betrayal-filled past, and her unexplained power as the crew’s real edge.

Summary

Amid ashfall in Luthadel, Vin seeks solitude in a watch-hole, reflecting on Reen’s lessons about betrayal and her habit of becoming numb to survive. Ulef summons her to the crew’s hotel suite, where Camon, dressed as a noble, berates and strikes her as he prepares for a complex scam arranged by fellow crewleader Theron.

Camon will impersonate Lord Jedue, a failing country noble seeking a Steel Ministry transport contract. Vin quietly improves the setup, urging that servants appear skaa-poor to match Jedue’s desperation. Though threatened, she is obeyed, revealing her value and careful calculation to stay indispensable.

Prelan Laird arrives with junior obligators. Camon plays the subservient, desperate lord, offering a steeply discounted, extended contract that would save his “house” while benefiting the Canton of Finance. Laird hesitates, wary of instability despite the bargain.

Sensing failure, Vin uses her "Luck"—instinctively dampening emotions—to calm Camon earlier and now reduce Laird’s suspicion and fear. Pressing harder as Laird wavers, Vin tips his judgment; he agrees to take the improved offer back to the Council.

The meeting ends with renewed consideration rather than rejection, credit owed to Vin’s covert intervention. Vin’s power remains unnamed to others, but it cements her worth within the crew and underscores her practiced, guarded approach to survival.
