Overview
Vin juggles relentless social travel while Renoux covertly forwards weapons and food to the rebel caverns. Kelsier and Yeden plan to leave to inspect the army and insert Marsh with Ministry acolytes. Marsh trains Vin to read Allomantic pulses with bronze, reveals he tracked her early talents, and cautions about Kelsier’s swelling Survivor myth. Vin recognizes Kelsier’s notoriety as both an asset and a growing risk.
Summary
Vin grows weary of constant carriage trips between Luthadel and Fellise for noble gatherings, reflecting on how easily she now passes as Lady Valette and how distant Elend Venture has been. A fresh ashfall underscores the skaa’s harsh labor, sharpening Vin’s doubts about noble ignorance and her own shifting identity.
At Mansion Renoux, Vin finds skaa loading barges with weapons and provisions. Kelsier and Lord Renoux explain the shipments will appear bound for a plantation but will secretly stock the rebellion’s caves, with decoy continuations to preserve the cover. Kelsier announces he and Yeden will depart to inspect the army and place Marsh among Ministry acolytes; Vin will remain in the city.
Circulating among workers, Vin overhears reverent whispers about the Survivor of Hathsin and the Eleventh Metal, realizing momentum centers on Kelsier’s legend rather than the rebellion alone. She worries whether Kelsier can relinquish that influence after the plan succeeds.
Marsh arrives and takes Vin to a balcony lesson in the subtleties of bronze. He teaches her to distinguish Allomantic pulses—Push vs. Pull, internal vs. external, and category patterns—arguing that bronze’s insight can outweigh copper’s blanket protection. Vin shows unusual aptitude identifying pulse origins yet struggles with finer distinctions, which Marsh says require practice.
Testing boundaries, Vin lightly Soothes Marsh, prompting him to reveal his hatred of obligators, the trauma that Snapped him, and that he once tracked Vin’s instinctive burning and pointed Dockson to her. He detects her manipulation, reprimands her, and confirms he intends to use Kelsier’s plan to infiltrate the Ministry for long-term gains. They discuss Kelsier’s past arrogance, changes after the Pits, and the dangers of his growing fame. Marsh advises that Kelsier must keep a lower profile.
Concluding the lesson, Marsh instructs Vin to practice reading pulses with Mistings and departs to rejoin Kelsier and Renoux. Vin reflects on the unfamiliarity of loyal sibling bonds and on the uneasy power of Kelsier’s myth as the operation advances.
