Overview
The crew reunites in lighthearted camaraderie as Kelsier advances plans: House Tekiel is failing, nobles edge toward open war, and Breeze may replace Yeden later. Vin accompanies Ham to the Garrison for pewter training, where they learn the Garrison will march in hours to crush a northern skaa rebellion—threatening Kelsier’s exposed army.
Summary
Late at night, Vin and Sazed arrive at Clubs’s shop to find Kelsier, Ham, Clubs, and Spook sharing drinks. The crew—soon joined by Dockson and Breeze—banter warmly, easing recent tensions. Discussion turns to strategy: House Tekiel is collapsing, assassinations are rising, and nobles will likely flee Luthadel. Kelsier tasks Ham to sound out the Garrison and suggests Breeze might later replace Yeden at the caves.
Vin requests to accompany Ham, seeking focused pewter instruction. Kelsier agrees. The next day, Vin sheds her noble disguise for street clothes and reflects on the personas she’s adopted. As they walk, Ham discusses family, the risks of being a Misting, and Kelsier’s growing zeal surrounding the Eleventh Metal.
Approaching the Garrison, Ham explains his standing with soldiers and outlines key pewter principles for Vin: vary burns, conserve strength, prioritize skill over raw power, and use targeted bursts for balance and speed while hiding Allomancy when needed.
At the gate, Captain Sertes privately informs Ham that the entire Luthadel Garrison will soon march to counter a sudden skaa rebellion to the north; Holstep is under attack, and reinforcements are urgent. Sertes offers Ham a commission and immediate command.
Ham agrees to return after dropping off Vin, masking his shock. Vin realizes their own skaa army at the caves is exposed and unready for open battle. The revelation transforms a routine training visit into a dire warning: the Garrison will depart within hours, threatening Kelsier’s plans and the rebels’ survival.
