Overview

Kelsier intensifies Vin’s Allomancy training with a perilous wall descent, then reveals the wider operation by bringing her to Fellise and impostor Lord Renoux’s manor. The crew revises their infiltration plan: Vin will pose as Renoux’s ward, with Terrisman Sazed refining her for court. Vin chooses to remain, motivated by curiosity rather than trust.

Summary

Vin practices Steelpushing atop Luthadel’s wall, panics during a risky descent, and is caught by Kelsier, who uses the moment to teach airborne balance and metal safety. He explains why embedded metals can’t be Pushed, even citing Inquisitors’ spikes.

They leave the city at night, and Kelsier calmly identifies a stalking mistwraith. He has Vin study the shapeshifting scavenger, explaining its macabre method of absorbing corpses and rearranging bones, and noting it is largely harmless and known to the nobility.

On the imperial highroad they meet Sazed, a Terrisman steward, who drives them toward Fellise. In the carriage, Vin probes Kelsier about Marsh and betrayal; Kelsier avoids details but insists his crews rely on trust. He offers Vin three thousand boxings and the option to leave, even turning the carriage back to prove the point. After warnings about burning only true Allomantic metals, Vin decides to stay—“to see what happens.”

They arrive at Manor Renoux, where the impostor noble greets them with convincing poise. While Kelsier and Renoux confer privately, Sazed converses with Vin about belief, gently challenging her assumptions and offering alternatives to Ministry doctrine.

Reunited, Kelsier and Renoux alter the plan: instead of posing as Renoux’s heir, which would draw scrutiny, Vin will be introduced as a low-status country scion under Renoux’s patronage—ideal for being present yet overlooked at court. Kelsier assigns Sazed to coach Vin in refinement and customs.

As the night ends, Kelsier apologizes for excluding her from the private talk and assures it was personal to Renoux’s impersonation, not her role. Shown to her room, Vin quietly asks Sazed if Kelsier is a good man; Sazed affirms it, and Vin, unused to such figures in her life, reflects on her decision to remain.
