Overview
Vin senses danger after Camon’s windfall and tries to flee, but Camon assaults her. Kelsier and Dockson arrive, Soothe the room, and remove Camon from power, claiming to have diverted a Steel Inquisitor. In a private talk, Kelsier tests Vin with metal vials and reveals she is a rare skaa Mistborn.
The revelation reframes Vin’s “Luck” as Allomancy, raising stakes with the Steel Ministry and setting her on a new path with Kelsier’s crew.
Summary
After Camon secures an implausibly large Ministry payment, Vin grows convinced the obligators will retaliate. She tries to leave the lair with Ulef, but Ulef betrays her. Camon publicly assaults Vin, and her meager “Luck” fails as he prepares to inflict a possibly lethal beating.
Kelsier and Dockson burst in. Kelsier knocks Camon back with unseen force and Soothes the room into calm. He announces he diverted a Steel Inquisitor tailing Camon from the Canton of Finance and demands payment for saving the crew. Milev hands over the three thousand boxings; Kelsier appoints Milev, orders Camon reduced to a beggar, rents the safe house for the night, and expels the crew.
Alone with Vin, Kelsier and Dockson reassure her, then warn never to use emotional Allomancy on obligators. Kelsier admits he only distracted—not killed—the Inquisitor. He exposes hidden watchers, asserts control, and shifts to testing Vin’s abilities.
Kelsier makes Vin drink a vial containing metals. She discovers an immense reservoir of two distinct powers and successfully Soothes and then Riots Kelsier’s emotions on command. Through questioning, Vin reveals a high prelan father and a skaa upbringing. Kelsier explains Allomancy, Mistings, and heredity, concluding that because Vin can access more than one power, she is a Mistborn.
The chapter ends with Kelsier framing Vin’s newfound status as power beyond noble constraints, positioning her for recruitment and confrontation with the Steel Ministry’s dangers.
