Overview

Vin settles into Clubs’s secure lair, then joins a full crew meeting where Kelsier formalizes the rebellion’s strategy. They will incite a house war, lure the Luthadel Garrison away by threatening the Pits of Hathsin, and raise a 10,000-strong army hidden in the Arguois caverns.

Roles are assigned: Breeze recruits, Ham trains, Kelsier procures arms via the impostor Lord Renoux, and Vin infiltrates noble society. Kelsier confirms provoking House Venture, and Marsh reenters to confront the Ministry problem.

Summary

Vin awakens in Clubs’s well-kept shop-lair, unsettled by comfort and cleanliness. After bathing and quietly observing the apprentices and kitchen staff, she meets Ham’s arrival and cautiously takes food. A nervous apprentice summons her to a third-floor strategy meeting.

Kelsier convenes the crew—Breeze, Ham, Dockson, Clubs, Yeden, and Clubs’s nephew—with a problem list: the Luthadel Garrison, sowing chaos, the Great Houses, the Ministry, securing atium, raising and hiding troops, preparing the skaa rebellion, and the Lord Ruler. The goal: collapse Luthadel’s order and seize the city.

Rejecting a skaa uprising or indiscriminate disaster, Kelsier proposes igniting a house war to throw the nobility into lethal conflict. The Garrison remains the critical obstacle. Prompted by Kelsier, Vin suggests avoiding a direct fight by distracting the larger foe. This leads to the plan to threaten the nearby Pits of Hathsin, compelling the Lord Ruler to deploy the Garrison, leaving Luthadel vulnerable.

They choose the Arguois caverns as a hidden base, aiming for a 10,000-man force: Breeze will recruit with emotional Allomancy, Ham will train ex–Suppression Campaign skaa soldiers, and Kelsier will procure arms and supplies through “Lord Renoux,” a slain noble replaced by an impostor. Kelsier admits his Venture raid was meant to be seen, accelerating noble paranoia and paving the way for war.

Because Dockson is compromised, the crew needs a court spy. With Renoux unable to face Inquisitors, Kelsier assigns Vin to impersonate a noblewoman and gather political intelligence. Yeden, overwhelmed, is told to prepare to govern whatever fragments of power remain; Kelsier still intends to try the Eleventh Metal against the Lord Ruler or lure him away if necessary.

When Ham raises the Ministry threat, Kelsier blithely assigns it to his brother. Marsh arrives, stern and imposing, cutting in with “Like hell you will,” and demands a private word with Kelsier as the meeting breaks.
