Overview

At Keep Elariel’s ball, Vin advances her cover, draws attention, and learns the court’s rhythms. Elend seeks her company yet seems to use her to irk his family, and he may be engaged to Lady Shan. Shan confronts and Soothes Vin, while her steward searches Elend’s books. Vin discovers Elend hides banned, anti–Lord Ruler texts and later spots him quietly meeting rivals. The night ends with a skaa boy’s casual execution, starkly exposing the nobility’s cruelty.

Summary

Vin arrives at Keep Elariel in a striking red dress, determined to strengthen her Lady Valette persona and gather intelligence. Elend Venture brazenly sits with her to read, flirting and teasing while seemingly using her presence to needle his family. Guided by Sazed’s advice, Vin accepts dances, easing suitors’ nerves by casting Elend as an “older brother,” and begins circulating among lesser lords for information.

On the floor, Lord Melend Liese offers little beyond confirming heightened house tensions and mentioning Lady Shan Elariel. Back at the table, Elend admits he may be engaged to Shan, then wanders off. Vin’s progress stalls when Shan’s Terrisman summons her; Shan belittles and interrogates Vin while subtly Soothing her. Spotting the steward riffling Elend’s books, Vin withdraws abruptly to protect whatever he’s seeking.

Alone again, Vin finds a thin book mislabeled as a weather volume that harshly criticizes the Lord Ruler—evidence that Elend reads banned, seditious texts. Elend returns, oblivious to her discovery, and departs with his books, soon joining two nobles: Jastes Lekal and a Hasting—rivals of House Venture—hinting at covert alliances outside official gatherings.

As the ball disperses, Sazed returns and identifies Elend’s companions. Outside, Vin witnesses a guard slit a skaa kitchen boy’s throat for begging, the corpse dragged into the mists while nearby nobles continue chatting. The brutal contrast between ballroom polish and casual murder hardens Vin’s perspective on Luthadel’s politics and the empire’s dehumanization of skaa.
