Overview

Clubs returns, agreeing to serve as the crew’s Smoker out of defiance toward the Lord Ruler. That night, Kelsier raids House Venture to secure atium, battling guards, hazekillers, and Mistings. He escapes injured but successful, securing vital resources and escalating open conflict with Luthadel’s strongest house.

Summary

After the crew meeting, Kelsier uncovers a hidden wine bottle and discusses next steps with Dockson and Vin. They need another Smoker and more atium. Clubs arrives with a teenage apprentice, confirms Breeze is gone, and—despite predicting failure—volunteers to join as Smoker to spite the Lord Ruler.

At dusk, Kelsier takes Vin and Dockson to the roof and prepares for a raid. Donning a mistcloak and arming himself with glass daggers and metals, he targets House Venture, the city’s strongest house, to seize atium and create a diversion.

Kelsier traverses Luthadel’s rooftops using steelpushes and ironpulls, infiltrates Keep Venture, silently kills a guard, and enters through a balcony. He locates a concealed wall safe in the lord’s study, rips it free, and draws guards. After swiftly killing two, he is confronted by eight hazekillers trained to fight Allomancers.

Outnumbered, Kelsier uses pewter, coins, and a metal paperweight with precise pushes and pulls to break their formation and lethally bludgeon several foes. Wounded and tiring, he then faces a new wave of noble Mistings—coinshots and thugs—and realizes he must retreat.

Kelsier dives through a shattered window, manipulates the fallen safe to haul it out after him, and rides its momentum to the ground. He smashes the strongbox open, recovers letters of credit, gems, and—crucially—a pouch of atium. Reclaiming his coin pouch and ignoring his injuries, he flees into the night toward Clubs’s shop, satisfied to have secured atium and bloodied Venture.
