Overview

Vin infiltrates Kredik Shaw amid citywide rebellion, briefly outmaneuvering two Inquisitors before being captured and stripped of her metals. Brought before the Lord Ruler, she witnesses Inquisitor Kar expose Lord Prelan Tevidian as her father; the Inquisitors execute Tevidian and gain authority over the Ministry.

Meanwhile, Elend rejects his father’s flight, consolidates forces with House Lekal, and plans to surrender to influence events from within, signaling a pivotal moral stand as the Final Empire destabilizes.

Summary

Vin approaches Kredik Shaw under torchlit mists, persuading four palace guards to defect to the uprising. She infiltrates the corridors, evades pursuers with Steelpushes, and confronts two Inquisitors. Using arrowheads and pewter dust to confuse their steel-sight, she cripples one and distracts the other, then forces entry into the Lord Ruler’s hidden chamber.

Inside, Vin finds a homelike den and an elderly man—the Lord Ruler—who orders her death. An Inquisitor instead restrains her, and Vin burns the Eleventh Metal, glimpsing alternate versions of the Lord Ruler before being struck unconscious.

Elsewhere, Elend Venture learns of the skaa rebellion. Lord Venture prepares to flee, but Elend refuses, recognizing the nobility must ally with the skaa against the true tyrant. Left in command, Elend orders Venture forces and servants to Keep Lekal for joint defense and selects a small guard, declaring his intent to surrender strategically.

Vin awakens imprisoned; an Inquisitor forces her to ingest and burn a mysterious metal that wipes out her reserves, leaving her powerless under the Lord Ruler’s oppressive Soothing. Injured but captive, she is escorted through unused halls and up a spire to a grand, mist-colored glass chamber where the youthful Lord Ruler presides with obligators and nine Inquisitors.

Inquisitor Kar petitions for control of the Ministry, citing corruption. He compels a revelation that Vin is Tevidian’s half-skaa daughter, then the Lord Ruler permits judgment. Six Inquisitors brutally execute Tevidian, and the Lord Ruler grants the Canton of Inquisition authority over the Ministry. Kar is allowed to interrogate Vin before her execution, while the Lord Ruler dismisses the ongoing rebellion as a manageable purge.
