Vin awakens in Clubs’s shop, wracked with pain and tended by Lestibournes (now called Spook). Dockson and Breeze report that Kelsier survived the palace incursion and that the Inquisitors focused more on Vin than on Kelsier, raising new questions. Vin recalls Sazed rescuing her but is told to rest.

Kelsier visits by night, apologizes for nearly getting her killed, and updates her: the skaa army grows, Renoux buys arms, and Marsh will attempt to infiltrate the Ministry as an acolyte. Kelsier asks Vin to resume her Lady Valette role in Fellise to quell rumors; both admit they are not invincible.

After several days, Vin rides to Fellise and reenters Mansion Renoux, noting how the crew’s care contrasts with her harsh past. Renoux greets her in full character, reinforcing her noble cover and her need to recover while maintaining appearances.

Vin seeks out Sazed in the library and presses him about his powers. He denies being an Allomancer and instead reveals he is a Terris Keeper—a steward who stores and recalls vast knowledge. He has retrieved the Khlenni tome from the palace and is translating it, claiming fluency in many dead languages.

Sazed explains Terris oppression: stewards are eunuchs bred and trained for obedience, and the Lord Ruler hunts Keepers despite tolerating Allomancers. Vin asks about the traitor from Kelsier’s past; Sazed says many believe it was Mare, though Kelsier never knew for sure. He notes Kelsier is changing under the burden of leading a rebellion. Exhausted, Vin retires, resolved to heal, train, and resume her part in the plan.
