Overview
Vin studies the logbook and, through Sazed, learns of Terris Feruchemy and the Keepers’ mission to preserve knowledge lost under the Lord Ruler. Spook awkwardly courts her with a handkerchief. Dockson arrives with business, then recounts his lover’s murder by a noble, challenging Vin’s growing sympathy for the nobility.
Summary
Vin reads the logbook’s Terris passages, finding the Lord Ruler’s tone fretful and the travels tedious. In Renoux’s gardens, Spook arrives with Dockson, nervously gifting Vin a lace handkerchief before fleeing. Curious and frustrated at being excluded, Vin seeks Sazed in the library.
Sazed urges Vin to persist with the logbook and, after prodding, reveals that the Terris packmen practiced Feruchemy—storing attributes in metal and later tapping them. He explains Keepers preserve knowledge, including religions, via copper memories, and that the Lord Ruler has long persecuted Terris, perhaps linked to a leader named Rashek. Sazed hints at storing sight, confirming Vin’s deduction about his recent need for spectacles.
Vin learns the handkerchief is a traditional token of courtship, realizing Spook’s intent. Their talk turns briefly to relationships within the crew and Sazed’s eunuch status, then Vin goes to see Dockson.
Dockson, in Renoux’s study, reports no news from Kelsier and discusses logistics. When Vin asks about plantation life, Dockson describes constant control and hardship and recounts how his lover, Kareien, was taken and killed by their lord, Devinshae. The event drove him to leave and fuels his resolve against the nobility.
Dockson argues that city nobles are complicit in systemic exploitation and murder of skaa, including through brothels and sanctioned killings. Vin resists the generalization, recalling noble acquaintances, but leaves unsettled, wondering if even someone like Elend could be implicated.
