Overview
Kelsier reaches the hidden cavern army, tightens security, and announces a command rotation—Yeden will lead while Hammond returns to Luthadel. Haunted by the Pits, Kelsier tests the troops’ resolve and stages a duel, secretly aiding Demoux to defeat the skeptic Bilg. He publicly vows to kill the Lord Ruler with the Eleventh Metal and implies he can empower soldiers, galvanizing morale and seeding rumors to support the larger atium heist strategy.
Summary
Traveling by canal, Kelsier reads the Lord Ruler’s translated logbook, noting the mortal doubt behind the tyrant’s myth. Arriving at a canal crossroads, he ostentatiously uses Allomancy to impress recruits, then links with Captain Demoux to enter a concealed cave complex. The narrow rift entry triggers Kelsier’s Hathsin trauma, but he descends publicly to show resolve.
Inside, Kelsier meets Hammond, inspects guard posts, orders stricter exit control and decoy trail-making, and observes training. He informs Hammond that Yeden will assume command to acclimate the troops to their eventual leader, while Hammond returns to Luthadel for intelligence. Kelsier and Hammond debate skaa–noble differences and purpose; Kelsier rejects any justification for aristocratic rule but remains troubled by the men’s fear.
Over a feast, Kelsier senses doubt and identifies Bilg as a charismatic skeptic. He addresses the army, then goads Bilg into voicing the core fear: the rebellion is suicidal. Kelsier invokes a noble duel, naming Demoux as champion. During the fight, Kelsier secretly Pusha/Pulls steel to misdirect Bilg’s strikes and amplify Demoux’s, shattering Bilg’s arm and forcing surrender. Demoux refuses to kill, and Kelsier halts the interference.
Seizing the moment, Kelsier promises he will wield the Eleventh Metal to slay the Lord Ruler and implies he can grant the soldiers arcane power, electrifying morale. In private, Hammond condemns the deception; Kelsier argues the lie is strategic—troops need only appear formidable while the crew seizes atium to bribe the Garrison and avoid major battles. He orders trusted soldiers sent to Luthadel to spread tonight’s tale, further cultivating the rebellion’s legend.
