Overview

Vin makes her first appearance as Lady Valette at Keep Venture, overcoming panic to be seen by the court. She observes obligators informally witnessing and recording agreements for bribes, then unexpectedly meets Elend Venture and draws his interest. Sazed realizes her anonymity is compromised, and they choose to withdraw, having established her cover.

Summary

Preparing for her first noble ball, Vin endures Sazed’s fashion regimen and reflects on why she stays with Kelsier’s crew: the possibility of genuine trust. En route, Kelsier drops onto the carriage, reinforces the mission—be seen, gather subtle signals about houses seeking weapons, and avoid risks—and departs to watch from the mists.

At illuminated Keep Venture, Vin nearly panics entering the crowded foyer, but realizes the nobles only see her constructed persona, Lady Valette, and regains composure. Seated to be visible yet solitary, she refuses several dance offers per Sazed’s plan and studies the hall’s grandeur, the dancers, and the obligators’ aloof presence.

Using Allomancy discreetly, Vin overhears an obligator “witness” a noble’s vow in exchange for coins, revealing the Ministry’s role as official record-keepers for private dealings. She then recognizes an older obligator as her father, suppresses alarm, and seeks the upper balcony for concealment and a better view.

On the dark balcony, Vin encounters a bookish young man, Elend, who casually converses, teases, and offers a dance she declines. He criticizes Venture excess and hints at concern for servants, intriguing Vin with his irreverence and apparent disinterest in courtly norms.

Sazed returns below, sees her empty seat, and reunites with Vin. When Vin names “Elend,” Sazed realizes she has spoken with Elend Venture, heir to House Venture, fretting that their controlled anonymity has slipped. They depart, having successfully established Lady Valette’s presence while drawing unexpected attention from Luthadel’s most prominent heir.
