After the ball, Vin sheds her disguise and endures Sazed’s firm questioning about her talk with Elend Venture. Kelsier and Lord Renoux worry that attracting the Venture heir could isolate Valette from the court’s broader circles. Vin diverts them by admitting she saw her obligator father. Suspicious, Vin equips her mistcloak and secretly follows Kelsier into the mists. She discovers two-by-two bronze bars staked in the ground, an Allomantic “road” enabling rapid leaps toward Luthadel. Using it, she reaches the city, spots Kelsier watching Keep Venture, fears he might target Elend, then chases him toward the city’s center.

Kelsier doubles back and catches Vin shadowing him. On a rooftop, he denies Elend is a Misting and insists Vin return to safety. Vin refuses, arguing she must do real Mistborn work. Pressed, Kelsier admits he’s heading for Kredik Shaw to seek a clue to defeating the Lord Ruler, though he hopes to avoid the tyrant himself.

Relenting, Kelsier gives Vin a bead of atium and has her burn it. Vin sees a future-shadow of Kelsier’s actions, then a flurry of branching images when Kelsier burns atium too, revealing how atium advantages cancel out.
