Overview
Wounded from the Venture ball, Vin admits she killed Mistborn Shan to save Elend, then clashes with Kelsier before reconciling on the rooftop. She reveals Venture’s atium role and demonstrates she can sense Allomancy through copper, prompting Kelsier to question Mare’s supposed betrayal. Meanwhile, Elend learns Valette’s skaa ties, and Straff claims Shan died on Venture grounds.
Summary
At Clubs’s kitchen gathering, Vin bursts in bloodied and in underclothes, revealing she fought and killed Mistborn Shan Elariel outside Keep Venture. As Sazed stitches her wounds, Dockson worries over exposure. Kelsier scolds Vin for risking the plan, and Vin erupts, accusing the crew of living like nobles and not understanding skaa hardship, then storms out.
On the rooftop, Kelsier approaches gently. Vin, hurting from Elend’s rejection and old trauma with Reen and her mother, confides her fear of being abandoned. Kelsier empathizes, admits his own lingering love for Mare, and softens his hard stance toward nobles and skaa. Vin urges him to help peasants more directly.
Vin then discloses House Venture’s weakness: they manage the atium harvest and delivery. Kelsier accepts the implication but won’t promise restraint. Vin suggests Mare may not have betrayed him; perhaps powerful Allomancers can be sensed through copper. Testing her theory, Vin correctly identifies Kelsier’s changing metals, proving she can pierce copperclouds. Kelsier credits her unusual strength and reconsiders the circumstances of Mare’s death.
Kelsier encourages Vin to rejoin the crew downstairs, assuring her missteps are forgivable. Their rapport restored, they head back to the kitchen.
Elsewhere, Elend and Jastes meet Venture spy Felt, who traces “Valette’s” steward to a fortified carpenter’s shop—likely a skilled skaa thieving hideout. Elend orders silence, conflicted yet oddly relieved she is a thief rather than a rival house agent, and ponders what her deception means for skaa–noble differences.
Back at Keep Venture, Straff informs Elend that an assassination team targeted him, claiming guards killed a Mistborn—Shan Elariel—while another escaped and rumors mention a third Mistborn intervening. Elend reflects on his naivety, vows to stabilize his house during the war, and resolves to revisit the truth with Valette later.
