Overview

Reeling from Kelsier’s execution, Vin witnesses the skaa spontaneously rally across Luthadel. A kandra posing as Renoux reveals Kelsier’s true plan: his death would birth a rebellion, supplied by hidden weapon caches and detailed orders dividing tasks among the crew.

Armed with atium and the Eleventh Metal, Vin resolves to infiltrate Kredik Shaw’s guarded chamber to uncover the Lord Ruler’s secret.

Summary

Vin grieves alone in the mists after Kelsier’s execution, doubting trust and faith. Sazed urges belief despite failure. From their rooftop, they hear voices and see skaa gathering as a fervent speaker invokes the Survivor, calling the people to rise. Torches bloom across Luthadel as pockets of crowds multiply.

Vin leads the crew to Kelsier’s rented warehouse, where they discover massive weapon caches. A figure emerges—Renoux’s kandra—wearing Kelsier’s bones and explains the design: Kelsier meant his death to inspire a rebellion, the army to provide a trained core, the house war to empty the Garrison, and the crew to become leaders of a new order.

The kandra delivers a pouch to Vin and departs. The crew examines Kelsier’s map and instructions: distribute arms from three warehouses; Breeze to subdue the Garrison and seize the gates; Ham to neutralize militarized Great Houses; Dockson to organize the swelling skaa; Clubs to lead the palace assault; Soothing stations already targeted. The city’s insurrection is set in motion.

Vin opens her pouch to find atium and the Eleventh Metal, along with a note in which Kelsier admits he never learned how the Eleventh Metal works and frames his death as necessary to give the people belief. As Dockson dispatches teams and skaa flood the warehouse, Vin refuses idleness and prepares her own kit—improvised spikes, pewter dust, and Eleventh Metal flakes.

Convinced the Lord Ruler’s power is deeper than Kelsier sensed, Vin decides her role is assassination and reconnaissance. She resolves to infiltrate Kredik Shaw that very night to penetrate the Inquisitor-guarded chamber Kelsier twice failed to breach and uncover what lies within.
