Part Four — Chapter Eighteen
Overview
Diomedes returns amid crisis while Stephanie targets Yuri for leaving the drugs cabinet open, citing Christian’s account. Theo counters by exposing Christian’s secret prior treatment of Alicia and his motive to silence her, alleging attempted murder. With the diary as potential proof, Diomedes agrees to call the police and retrieve it.
Summary
Diomedes arrives tense from Trust meetings and delays, and summons Theo to his office, where Stephanie is already pressing for answers. The leadership fears fallout that could threaten the Grove’s future, while Theo anticipates blame for Alicia’s collapse.
Stephanie presents a neat explanation: Christian saw the drugs cabinet left open and Alicia nearby; therefore Yuri’s lax security enabled Alicia’s overdose. She positions Yuri as responsible, despite Theo’s doubts and Diomedes’s fatalistic view that Alicia was determined to die.
Theo rejects the suicide narrative and asserts it was not an accident either. He accuses Christian of lying, then discloses what Alicia’s diary revealed: Christian secretly treated Alicia before Gabriel’s murder, failed to disclose this at trial, and later pretended not to know her, giving him a motive to oppose her recovery and potentially to silence her.
Pressed about the diary, Theo says he returned it to Alicia. Recognizing the gravity, Diomedes proposes immediate action: retrieve the diary and call the police, shifting the investigation from internal scapegoating to potential attempted murder by Christian.
