Part One — Chapter Eight
Overview
Theo studies Alicia’s file, noting a violent canteen incident with Elif and her early self-harm. He formulates a plan centered on Alcestis and Alicia’s childhood. Defying protocol, Theo begins contacting family: Max is unavailable and Lydia responds abusively. This marks Theo’s first boundary-crossing step in his investigation.
Summary
Theo opens Alicia’s handwritten file from Diomedes in his cold, sparse office. Skimming past Diomedes’s interpretations, Theo combs nurses’ reports for concrete behavior. He learns that early on Alicia repeatedly self-harmed and required close observation, then withdrew into near-invisibility among patients.
One entry stands out: weeks after admission, Elif accused Alicia of taking her seat; Alicia allegedly smashed a plate and tried to slash Elif’s throat before being restrained and isolated. The account feels off to Theo, prompting him to plan a direct conversation with Elif.
Writing to organize his thinking, Theo identifies two investigative pillars: the painting Alcestis as Alicia’s sole communication, and Alicia’s childhood as the likely origin of her violence. He decides to revisit the painting and seek background from people who knew her before the murder.
From the file, Theo notes Alicia’s aunt, Lydia Rose, and her lawyer, Max Berenson. Aware that unsolicited contact is unorthodox and likely to displease Diomedes, Theo proceeds anyway. He calls Max’s office and learns Max is away; he then calls Lydia, who responds with hostility and hangs up. Theo recognizes this as his first professional transgression, foreshadowing further boundary crossings.
