Part Four — Chapter Eight

Overview

Theo accompanies Paul to Alicia’s childhood roof hideout, where Paul recounts the day of Eva’s fatal accident and Vernon’s cruel outburst wishing Alicia had died instead. Alicia’s response—“He killed me”—gives Theo the psychological key he sought. He connects this wound to Alcestis and resolves to reach Alicia through it.

Summary

Theo follows Paul to the family house at night and climbs a slippery, plant-covered ladder to the roof hideout Alicia used as a child. Tension spikes when Paul suddenly grabs Theo away from the edge. They smoke in the cold and Paul recalls spending time up there with Alicia since childhood.

Paul notes the climbing plant is jasmine and connects its bloom to the day of Eva’s fatal car accident. He frames the roof as the “scene of the crime,” then explains that, below, a drunken Vernon raged, calling for Alicia and lamenting Eva’s death. Vernon cried that it should have been Alicia who died.

Hidden on the roof, Alicia heard Vernon’s words and whispered to Paul, “He killed me.” Theo recognizes this as a defining psychic wound: a father’s rejection that annihilated Alicia’s sense of worth.

On the train back to London, Theo interprets the revelation through Alcestis: as Admetus condemned Alcestis, Vernon’s rejection constituted a “psychic infanticide.” Theo theorizes Alicia’s buried rage later erupted and was displaced onto Gabriel. Convinced he now understands her core trauma, Theo believes he finally knows how to reach her and begin real therapy.
