Part Two — Chapter Eleven
Overview
Theo seeks out Elif and learns she taunted Alicia about killing her husband just before a past canteen attack, clarifying the provocation behind Alicia’s violence. Elif’s active paranoia surfaces. A returned call from Max Berenson leads Theo to secure an in-person meeting, opening a new avenue into Alicia’s past.
Summary
Theo asks Yuri where to find Elif and heads to the recreation room after her art therapy session. He approaches Elif, noting her hostility and that she is Indira’s patient, and attempts to establish a brief rapport.
When Theo brings up Alicia, Elif grows wary and distracted, acknowledging voices warning her to be careful. She refuses to share her pool cue, underscoring her possessiveness and suspicion, but Theo persists with questions.
Theo asks about the early canteen incident between Elif and Alicia. Elif admits she asked Alicia if her husband “deserved it” and pressed for gruesome details about the shooting, effectively taunting her. Theo feels disgust and recognizes Elif’s pattern of provoking hatred in others, which likely triggered Alicia’s assault.
As Theo steps into the corridor, he receives a call from Max Berenson. Theo requests an in-person conversation about Alicia; despite reluctance, Max agrees to meet at his office the following evening at seven and abruptly ends the call.
