Part One — Chapter Four

Overview

Theo arrives at the Grove, battling nerves and doubts stoked by a former consultant’s warning the unit might be axed. He meets the strict manager Stephanie Clarke and friendly head nurse Yuri, experiences tightened security, and decides to jump straight into the Community meeting, signaling his determination to engage immediately.

Summary

Theo reaches the Grove on a frigid January day, breaks his week-long attempt to quit smoking, and acknowledges his anxiety about the new job. He recalls his Broadmoor consultant’s warning that moving to the Grove—rumored to be at risk of closure and led by the unorthodox Diomedes—could be career suicide, but he remains resolved.

Inside reception, the unit’s childlike decor contrasts with the notion of a secure facility. Theo is greeted by Yuri, the head psychiatric nurse from Latvia, who provides keys and mentions recently tightened security since Stephanie’s arrival.

Stephanie Clarke, the Grove’s manager, introduces herself with a focus on safety and hands Theo a personal alarm, setting a firm tone. Theo decides to keep on her good side, recognizing her authority and the unit’s emphasis on risk management.

At the ward entrance, a security guard confiscates Theo’s lighter while reiterating no sharp objects or lighters are allowed. Guided by Yuri through decaying corridors and multiple locked doors, Theo senses the institution’s underfunding alongside rigorous controls.

Learning that the staff and patients are in a Community meeting, Theo opts to join immediately rather than settle into his office. He steels himself, opens the meeting room door, and steps inside, committing to active engagement from the outset.
