Part Two — Chapter Three
Overview
Theo bonds with Indira, who offers support and frames Alicia’s care as containing and maternal. Christian confronts Theo, predicts the Grove’s closure, and reduces Alicia’s risperidone to five milligrams while dismissing therapy. Elif’s outburst underscores ward volatility, sharpening professional conflict and setting stakes for Alicia’s treatment trajectory.
Summary
After lunch, Theo roams the Grove seeking a cigarette but is intercepted by Indira near a fire escape. She shepherds him to the nurses’ station—the “goldfish bowl”—shares tea and walnut cake, and talks about patients’ fixation on snow, projecting a calm, maternal presence that reassures Theo.
Inside the glass-walled hub, Christian arrives, cool and confrontational. He warns the Grove faces closure and questions Theo’s decision to join, implying opportunism. Their exchange hints at old tensions from Broadmoor and establishes Christian’s skeptical, competitive stance.
An explosive thud interrupts them: Elif pounds the glass, refusing her pills and demanding to stop medication. Christian brusquely dismisses her through the hatch. After she leaves, he labels Elif “difficult” and reveals her history of suffocating her mother and sister, while Theo notices her apparent dominance among patients.
Observing Alicia alone by a window, Theo learns from Christian that Alicia’s risperidone has been reduced to five milligrams, with a plan to monitor effects. Christian accuses Theo of going behind his back to Diomedes and declares Alicia “borderline,” alleging she is choosing silence and cannot benefit from therapy.
Indira counters Christian’s stance, arguing diagnostic labels are unhelpful and emphasizing therapy as a safe, containing space where nonverbal communication matters. Christian remains derisive, while Indira articulates a protective, maternal countertransference toward Alicia—positioning Theo as a needed caregiver and setting up a clear therapeutic-philosophical divide.
