Chapter Thirty-Three
Overview
At a tense management meeting, Stephanie asserts control after Elif’s stabbing, prioritizing safety and placing Alicia in seclusion. Christian blames Theo for destabilizing Alicia, while Indira defends therapeutic risk-taking. Fearing the unit’s closure, Diomedes halts Alicia’s psychotherapy and painting, overruling Theo’s appeals.
Summary
Theo attends a meeting in Diomedes’s office where Stephanie Clarke immediately takes charge, framing the crisis as a health-and-safety issue. She argues Alicia’s privileges caused jealousy and declares Alicia a threat, justifying seclusion. Theo challenges this as cruel, but Stephanie cites her managerial authority and Christian’s support.
Christian openly blames Theo for “stirring things up,” pointing to reduced medication and therapy as destabilizing. Theo defends his approach, insisting Alicia had been overmedicated and needed engagement, not isolation. Diomedes, weary and evasive, suggests therapy has pushed Alicia too far, too fast.
Indira backs Theo philosophically, arguing the clinic has become risk-averse and should “sit with the madness” rather than lock it away. Diomedes interrupts, saying it is too late and accepting nominal responsibility while effectively faulting the psychotherapy effort. He frames the unit’s precarious funding and potential closure as decisive constraints.
Despite Theo’s pleas to continue therapy (even if painting stops), Diomedes concludes Alicia is not suitable for psychotherapy. The decision stands: Alicia remains in seclusion, painting is ended, and therapy is halted. Theo recognizes further argument is futile as Stephanie, Christian, and institutional pressures prevail.
