Part Four — Chapter Eleven
Overview
Theo presses Alicia about her silence and why she has resumed speaking. Alicia says shock, then futility, kept her mute, and that Theo’s arrival changed everything. She reveals the supposed break-in night involved Jean-Felix, not the stalker, but refuses to say what happened next. Their session turns confessional, eroding therapeutic boundaries.
Summary
Theo opens the session by directly questioning Alicia about her long silence, fearing the previous breakthrough might have been temporary. Alicia initially resists, offering only that there was “nothing to say.” Pressed, she explains that after Gabriel’s death she was in shock and literally could not speak; when her voice returned, it felt too late and pointless.
Theo asks why she has begun speaking now. Alicia states it is because Theo came to the Grove and insists he understand what happened to her. When Theo affirms he believes her story about a man watching her, she accepts this without question and agrees to continue.
Turning to the final diary entry, Theo asks what happened after the reported break-in. Alicia discloses that the intruder that night was not the stalker but Jean-Felix, who arrived to discuss her exhibition. She asked him to leave; he argued and shouted but left after a while. When Theo presses for what happened afterward, Alicia refuses to discuss it yet.
Shifting away from the event, Alicia steers the conversation to broader personal terrain. She and Theo talk at length about her aunt Lydia, cousin Paul, her mother, and the summer her mother died, as well as Theo’s own childhood and father.
Theo recognizes they are crashing through professional boundaries as Alicia appears to enjoy the dynamic and his investment. The session ends with their roles increasingly entangled, setting up further revelations while withholding the crucial events that followed Jean-Felix’s visit.
