Part Four — Chapter Nine
Overview
Theo confronts Alicia with Paul’s account of her father wishing she had died, calling it “psychic murder.” The accusation pierces Alicia’s silence, especially when Theo risks his job and declares it their last session. Alicia struggles to speak, then agrees to talk, marking a crucial breakthrough.
Summary
The scene opens with Theo and Alicia sitting in practiced silence. Alicia stares past the bars at the shifting sky, hands clenching and unclenching as Theo prepares to risk a bolder approach.
Theo discloses what Paul told him: as a child, Alicia overheard her father wish she had died instead of her mother. He anticipates a reaction but gets none, then frames the revelation personally—saying he understands damaged childhoods and calling her father’s words “psychic murder.”
This accusation jolts Alicia; she shoots Theo a blazing, murderous look. Seizing the moment, Theo admits he is meeting her without permission and warns this will be their final meeting if nothing changes.
Under that pressure and recognition, Alicia’s defenses crack. She struggles to form words, whispering “What… what—” as Theo urges her to continue. After a tense pause, Alicia decides to engage and quietly says, “Okay,” agreeing to talk.
