Part Five — Chapter Two

Overview

Theo and Indira clear Alicia’s room as the Grove prepares to free her bed. Theo reflects on his motives, admits framing Christian, and justifies keeping Alicia sedated while visiting her. A crucial setback emerges when Theo realizes Alicia’s diary is missing, threatening his cover and plans.

Summary

Indira and Theo pack Alicia’s few belongings on Stephanie’s orders to clear the bed. They sort sketches and a defaced painting; Theo urges Indira to keep a portrait she unknowingly modeled for and decides to call Jean‑Felix about the painting.

Alone, Theo narrates his justification: he claims he never intended Gabriel’s death, only to expose Gabriel’s lack of love so Alicia could rebuild. He says he was unaware of Alicia’s past instability and therefore sought a job at the Grove to help her and assuage guilt, not to cover his tracks.

Theo recalls realizing he had triggered Alicia’s older trauma and concludes Gabriel’s death stemmed from deeper wounds. When Alicia’s lie revealed she recognized him, Theo decided to silence her, framed Christian as retribution for past failures, and injected Alicia with morphine. He now visits her coma bedside, believing he has not lost her.

As Indira leaves, Theo prepares to go—then panics: Alicia’s diary is missing. He ransacks the room, overturning boxes, clothes, drawers, and the art portfolio, but fails to find it. Without the diary, Theo fears there’s little to implicate Christian and his scheme may unravel.
