Part Two — Chapter Eight

Overview

Theo reels after discovering Kathy’s affair, spiraling into self-loathing and panic. An accidental injury intensifies his crisis as he fixates on losing Kathy yet cannot let go. Overwhelmed, he breaks boundaries by seeking help from his former therapist, Ruth, who lets him in—signaling a desperate turn toward support.

Summary

Theo avoids Kathy after discovering her infidelity, numbing himself with a joint and wine. He accidentally smashes a glass and slices his finger, watching the blood as his panic and self-loathing intensify. He longs for Kathy’s comfort but feels locked out emotionally, overwhelmed by a torrent of degrading thoughts.

As the clock ticks, Theo’s inner voices amplify his worthlessness and the collapse of the relationship’s “mythology.” Memories of past despair return, including a college suicide attempt and his unreliable mother, whom he knows cannot help amid his father’s temper. Suffocated by their flat and its lilies, he flees outside.

Walking aimlessly, Theo replays the relationship, weighing Kathy’s kindness against signs he missed. He debates confronting her, fears rejection, and admits he has more to lose. Despite the betrayal, he still loves Kathy and clings to the bond, recognizing his dependence and feeling trapped by it.

Unconsciously, Theo finds himself near Ruth’s home. Desperate and disregarding professional boundaries, he rings her bell. Ruth, now frailer and elderly, opens the chained door, sees his injured finger, and invites him in. Theo steps inside, turning toward help amid his unraveling.
