Chapter 55

Before dawn in Tabr, Stilgar and Duncan Idaho finish an all-night argument over Alia’s corruption and the constraints of Stilgar’s declared neutrality. Stilgar allows receiving but not sending messages, refusing Idaho’s plea to warn Jessica. Idaho insists Alia is possessed and that Temple strings lead back to the Regency.

Stilgar acknowledges growing troubles and the Fremen Trial of Possession as a last resort but clings to neutrality to protect Ghanima, Irulan, and his people. He rejects Idaho’s push to act, citing extenuating possibilities and the danger of personal revenge clouding judgment.

When Javid arrives with messages from Alia, Idaho abruptly stabs him dead, then hurls the three deadliest Fremen insults at Stilgar—calling him collared, a seller of Fremen for water, and without immortality—to compel a fatal response. Enraged, Stilgar kills Idaho with a thrust to the heart.

As Idaho dies, he frames his act as a deliberate sacrifice—“Two deaths for the Atreides”—making Stilgar’s position untenable. Surrounded by witnesses, Stilgar grasps Idaho’s strategy: Alia must publicly avenge Duncan, forcing Stilgar into open opposition.

Resolute, Stilgar orders his people to pack and summon worms. He declares that all his wives and Ghanima will go with him, inviting Irulan if she wishes. He denies taking Ghanima as hostage, believing she is safer with him, and recalls Leto’s warning to flee Alia, committing to the desert and rebellion.
