Chapter 12

In a damp cavern lit by a spice lamp, Muriz of the Cast Out convenes six bound captives: two soft-featured city pilgrims and four desert Fremen, including paid guides. He presents his adolescent son, Assan Tariq, declaring a ritual test of manhood rooted in Jacurutu’s memory and the Cast Out’s harsh code.

The soft-featured city man protests they came on umma seeking a religious awakening, but Muriz rejects this, calling out their hired guides and invoking the old ways and the need to detect demons. Tension rises as a darker desert Fremen orders the protester to be silent, branding their captors “water stealers.”

Muriz grants Assan the captives’ lives and futures as guardian shades, framing the rite as necessary for a future judge of Shuloch. Assan publicly accepts, recalling the night their people were murdered and asserting that the victims owe water to the Cast Out.

Assan executes the six in turn with a crysknife thrust under the chin, spilling minimal blood. Most captives meet death defiantly, spitting in the old way to show contempt for the theft of their water, while the soft-featured city man cries out.

With the killings complete, attendants remove the bodies to the deathstill for rendering. Muriz affirms Assan’s new manhood, promises their enemies’ water will feed slaves, and warns that the Preacher must not learn of this act. He closes by praising Assan and reaffirming that intruders into Shuloch cannot be allowed to survive.
