Overview
Held in Jacurutu and kept in a spice trance, Leto turns his ancestral control against his captors, hypnotizes Sabiha, and escapes despite severe weakness. A sudden desert storm severs communications and halts any pursuit. Namri reveals he sabotaged Leto’s stillsuit, raising the stakes as Halleck grapples with saving or losing the boy.
Summary
Leto awakens in his Jacurutu cell to Sabiha tending him, her hair tinkling with water rings as she feeds him spice-laced food meant to keep him suspended between trance and wakefulness. He reflects on the Bene Gesserit marriage plan, his organized ancestral memories, and the danger of revealing himself to Gurney while Namri watches for weakness.
Overwhelmed by visions and erotic longing centered on Sabiha, Leto gently speaks to her, describes a future with her, and then hypnotizes her into sleep. Realizing his body is weak but his mind clear, he seals his stillsuit, slips from the cell, and boldly heads for a lower exit, taking a Fremkit.
Halleck rouses Sabiha and learns Leto is gone. Sabiha admits Leto bewitched her; Namri coolly notes Leto’s strength of mind and reveals he disabled the stillsuit’s heel pumps, ensuring Leto will die without recovery. Halleck resists striking Namri, recalling Jessica’s warning that Namri might need to kill Leto.
As a massive sandblast storm closes in, satellites sign off and communications fail, preventing messages or a search. Halleck fears the storm will destroy Leto; Namri argues they must wait for contact to resume and, if necessary, find the remains. Sabiha holds a faint hope Leto could hide with the Fremkit, but the sietch is effectively trapped.
