An epigraph laments the end of an Atreides ruler, framing a world of fading devotions. Leto, newly cautious of prescient traps, decides to act outside his visions: he must sever the thread tying him to Sabiha and escape Jacurutu. Surveying the terrain, he rejects the fully unexpected and plans a southern route into the Tanzerouft.

As darkness falls, Leto spots a vast storm building across the Great Flat and realizes it lies directly in his path. Accepting this risk as a way to cut fate-threads, he descends a gorge and crosses onto open desert. He plants a thumper, recalls Gurney’s likely expectations, and invokes his father in resolve.

A smaller-than-hoped sandworm answers. Leto mounts and forces it south through the night despite its tendency to veer west and the storm’s looming pressure. At dawn the storm strikes: dust blinds, sand needles scour, and the worm nears exhaustion. Rejecting the old tale of immobilizing a worm to weather the gale, he frees it to burrow, leaps clear of the furnace at its tail, and digs into a dune’s lee to deploy and bury a stilltent.

Entombed beneath cascading sand, Leto recognizes the storm’s likely burial depth and adopts a dormancy trance to survive with minimal breath. In this suspended state he commits to breaking the remaining prescient threads until only the Golden Path remains. He renounces the false caliphate built on his father’s worship and resolves to return transformed, aligned to the harsh necessity of that path.
