Summary
The chapter opens with reflections on Alia’s lifelong struggle as pre-born: unable to escape ancestral personas, she trained obsessively to preserve her own identity. Responsibility as Regent once muted her fear, but spice trances and inner reliance worsened the pressure of those within.
After judging Essas Paymon, a CHOAM spy, Alia first tries to recruit him, then—provoked by his quoted scripture and Javid’s report—orders his execution. The decision haunts her through a sleepless night and into a disorienting morning in the Keep’s roof garden, where ecological changes mirror her internal instability.
Assailed by a cacophony of ancestral voices, Alia collapses onto a bench. In the frenzy, the persona of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen surfaces, silences the others, and offers a pact: he will help her control the inner multitude in exchange for occasional access to her senses.
