Summary
An epigraph warns against narrowing futures. Near noon in Arrakeen, Alia receives Buer Agarves, who reports that Duncan Idaho and Javid are dead in Tabr. Agarves relates Stilgar’s account: Duncan slew Javid, then provoked Stilgar, who killed Duncan. Stilgar has freed his people to choose, then fled into the desert with many, including Ghanima and Irulan.
Alia tests Agarves’ loyalty, extracting his promise to kill Stilgar. She appoints him to hunt Stilgar, promises him Naibhood if he succeeds, and directs him to coordinate with Zia for troops and limited ’thopters.
