Summary
On Ayil, the Holy Day venerating Muad’Dib, the Preacher appears in the plaza of Alia’s temple despite an arrest order. The square is crowded with pilgrims. Alia, disguised in a stillsuit and robe, orders no interference and moves close to observe him, suspecting he may be Paul.
The Preacher addresses the throng, urging them to abandon certainty and confront the present, condemning the institutional cowardice and atrocities of Muad’Dib’s church. A disguised Priest challenges him, but the Preacher turns the crowd by attacking clerical complacency and invoking Muad’Dib’s teachings about risk and uncertainty.
As tensions rise, Alia edges nearer, enthralled and angered. The Preacher’s words suggest Leto II’s “ending” carries a lesson beyond death, unsettling Alia. He demonstrates uncanny precision, pointing out the disguised Priest and stirring the crowd while keeping control through Voice and rhetorical force.
The Preacher suddenly seizes Alia’s arm without hesitation, publicly proclaiming Paul’s warning that absolute prediction is death. He then pulls her down the steps and, in a private whisper, calls her “sister,” ordering her to stop pushing him into the background, confirming his identity as Paul to Alia.
The Preacher departs with his young guide as the crowd parts reverently. Alia, overwhelmed, recognizes beyond doubt that the Preacher is Paul. Paralyzed by despair and isolation, she cannot turn to Duncan, Jessica, or her inner lives; even Ghanima is out of reach behind guards, leaving Alia shaken and alone.
