Chapter 6

At twilight above Sietch Tabr, Leto plays the baliset Gurney Halleck gave him, letting ancestral memories stir and intensify his sense of separation from Ghanima. He broods on Arrakis’s transformation—water and green replacing the old Fremen desert—and feels assaulted by inner lives as night falls.

Observing qanats and predator fish below, Leto connects ecological clues and reveals to Ghanima that sandtrout were introduced to a once-wet Arrakis. To survive, they encysted free water, creating the desert and enabling the sandworm phase. With sandtrout now receding, he foresees the end of worms and thus the spice.

The twins grasp the political stakes: Fremen will understand threats to water and power, but may not believe children if Alia denies it. They resolve to convince Stilgar by showing imbalance. Leto links Alia’s gloating to this knowledge and fears the accelerating change.

Leto confesses that prescient dreams have begun; he had foreknowledge of Jessica’s delay and visions of himself armored and crossing dunes, and of Jacurutu. He resolves to find and question the Preacher, suspecting their father. Ghanima shares his dread, and the unspoken danger of Abomination hangs between them as they return to the sietch.
