Chapter 30

Overview

On Salusa Secundus, Farad’n confronts accusations over Leto’s death, breaks with Wensicia’s plotting, and assumes authority. Jessica, recognizing Bene Gesserit maneuvers, offers to publicly declare she came willingly and to train Farad’n in exchange for Wensicia’s banishment. Farad’n rejects Alia’s marriage gambit, frees Jessica, and commits to Bene Gesserit-style education.

Summary

In Shaddam’s old audience chamber, Farad’n receives the bound Jessica and Duncan Idaho under threat from a stationed mute. He reports Arrakis news: Leto presumed dead by tiger attack, Ghanima held as a hostage amid a fragile truce, and Alia promising a Trial of Possession with doubtful intent.

Wensicia brings a Landsraad notice accusing House Corrino of Leto’s assassination. Farad’n publicly rebukes his mother, demands to make decisions himself, and secures promise of his formal investiture. Jessica tests the situation, suspecting Wensicia’s role in the tiger plot and noting Bene Gesserit messaging embedded in the protest.

Jessica proposes a path: she will declare she came voluntarily and serve as Farad’n’s Bene Gesserit instructor, provided she has full freedom. Wensicia objects and is dismissed from the room. Weighing mentat cautions from Bashar Tyekanik, Farad’n hears Idaho’s analysis that Alia expects Corrino to kill the prisoners, while the Sisterhood aims to arbitrate and control both Atreides and Corrino through a Ghanima–Farad’n union.

Jessica enters a mnemonic trance, concludes the Sisterhood tricked her, and reveals their hidden promise to seat Farad’n with Ghanima. Farad’n discloses Alia’s marriage offer at the price of Jessica’s and Idaho’s deaths; Jessica confirms the trap. Idaho, exhausted and bound, slices his wrist on the shigawire; medics intervene, and Farad’n clarifies he will not accept Alia.

Jessica demands Wensicia’s banishment as the price for her cooperation. Farad’n agrees, signals in an Atreides-style battle language, and frees Jessica, accepting her as tutor in Bene Gesserit disciplines. The new alignment forms: Farad’n assumes control, distances himself from Wensicia and Alia, and embraces training intended to reshape Corrino strategy.
